Nov. Term AD 1865
The undersigned administrator of the estate of J.H. Ruff deceased, begs leave to make the following report of his expenditures of money in behalf of said estate. Owing to the slaves having been set free, your administrator failed to have a good crop made on plantation of said decedent. For 3 years before said Negroes were liberated it was impossible to control them, owing to their threats to flee to the Federal lines, and their expectation of Freedom. Orator employed overseers regularly to superintend said hands on said farm tut they ... failed to produce good crops, all of which orator could not avoid. Orator was therefore compelled to sell cotton for absolute necessities of life to support and sustain  the widow and children together with sixteen Negroes ... and your orator has been compelled to support them for the year 1865 by Federal authorities ... therefore prays your honor to grant him an allowance for the following sales of cotton: sold 2 bales cotton in Memphis, Tennessee, 1 bale weighing 480 lbs., 1 bale weighing 480 lbs, 1 bale weighing 440 lbs., 3 bales weighing 350 lbs. ...
