John H. Ruff Estate Packet: 1862 |
John Henry Ruff was born about 1810 in South Carolina. About 1837 he married Cynthia Ann Gillespie in South Carolina. About 1844 he immigrated to Itawamba County with his brother George Ruff where they settled in the Richmond area, in the southwestern part of the county. John Henry and George were both quite successul planters in Itawamba County where they produced cotton. Children of John Henry Ruff and Cynthia Ann included: Mary Jane (married Robert Estes), Andrew J., Henry H., George W., W.J., Louisa, Elizabeth and John. John Henry Ruff died June 2, 1862 in Itawamba County on his farm near the village of Richmond. ---------------------------------------------------------- |

July Term AD 1862 The petition of R.W. Palmer, a resident of said county, respectfully shows that John. H. Ruff, late of said county departed this life on the 2nd day of June last leaving no will so for as your petitioner knows or believes. That said intestate died , siezed and possessed of a small real and personal estate consisting of a tract of land in said county containing about two hundred acres, thirteen Negro slaves, young and old, a small stock of horses, cattle and hogs, some farming utensils and some debts due him evidenced by notes and open accounts, all of said personal estate estimated to be worth not exceeding Eight Thousand dollars. That your petitioner is not in any way related to said decedent but the widow and next of of kin of said decedent, who being first entitled to Letters of Administration, having removed their right under the statutes ... that your petitioner beleiving thta said estate should be immediately administered as well for the proper management of said land, Negroes &c ... prays that letters of administration be granted ... Gaither or bearer, Seventy Five Dollars for the hire of the Negro boy Martin for the year 1862. We are to furnish said boy with 3 suits of clothes, that is 2 summer and one winter suit, 2 pairs of shoes, 2 pair socks, 1 woold hat and blanket of good size and pay the tax on said boy (state and Confederate) for that year, the term to commence on the 1st day of January and end the 24th day of December of that year.
