John T. Mullins was born 1823 in Georgia. He married Anna Nanney (born July 6, 1830 in Lauderdale County, Alabama) about 1846 and moved to Texas where their child Sarah E. was born during 1847. By 1849 they had moved back to Itawamba County where James M. (born 1849), Wiley R. (born 1851) and Thomas J. (born 1853) were all born. John T.  died on November 10, 1859 in Itawamba County. He was apparently a brick mason according to the estate sale that was held. On February 9, 1862 his widow married William Throckmorton Gillentine, a widower and neighbor. Shortly after their marriage he died in Civil War service and she later married Adam Yeager on August 18, 1862.
